Jason W. Osborne: Focus on Institutional Mission to Thrive Through the “Demographic Cliff”

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:36:19 GMT

Higher education in America has been successfully adapting to sociocultural and demographic shifts throughout much of its long history.  The industrial revolution, GI Bill, admission of women and students of color, and broad reductions of state support for public institutions resulted in changes to operations, culture, and mission. Recently, concern over a “Demographic Cliff,” an expected decrease in high school graduates, has been a common topic for discussion.  We believe that many institutions can use this “Demographic Cliff” as an opportunity to rethink institutional priorities and refocus on institutional mission.  This demographic shift is not an ignorable issue, yet we expect most institutions will respond productively to this coming challenge, and perhaps emerge stronger for having done so.  We present a few topics below we think are worth considering: The “Cliff” is not the same everywhere, for all institutions. The latest forecast from the data crunchers at BDSA has the U.S. cannabis industry growing to just south of $30 billion by the end of the year. Globally, they project the industry to be worth $36.7 billion in 2023 with roughly 80%, or $29.6 billion, of sales coming from the U.S. state markets. BDSA is expecting the global marketplace to grow about 13% a year through 2027. The U.S. market is expected to be worth $45 billion by that time. “Over the next five years, the biggest drivers of cannabis industry growth in the U.S. will be the thriving Midwest and East Coast markets,” said Roy Bingham, co-founder and CEO of BDSA. “New markets, especially adult-use markets like Missouri, New Jersey and New York, will lead growth. Although mature Western markets such as Colorado and California have experienced sales stagnation or decline due to price compression, they will continue to account for a substantial portion of legal sales through 2027.”  BDSA went on to cover some of the key numbers ...

Review: ‘Wizard of Oz’ reborn — and how! — at SF’s American Conservatory Thearter

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 03:36:19 GMT

There’s no place like home.Director and choreographer Sam Pinkleton’s wonderfully wacky “Wizard of Oz” is steeped in an ingenious mix of high camp and low-tech that revels in a distinctly San Francisco sense of aesthetics.Certainly the staging’s gender fluidity is a nice wink to the culture wars raging across the country. Welcome to Oz, this ACT production seems to say, no matter who you are, you will be celebrated here. That heartwarming subtext and a whimsy-on-steroids vibe elevates this production, particularly at the beginning and end of Dorothy’s journey. In the middle of the adventure, things tend to sag, particularly for some of the little ones in the audience. In this Oz revamp, the girl in the blue gingham dress is transformed into a kiddo (Chanel Tilghman) in a Batman T-shirt and a hoodie. The Scarecrow (Danny Scheie) is a crocheted Raggedy Ann-style moppet. The Wicked Witch of the West (Courtney Walsh) is a corporate lawyer-type in a blue suit. Toto is a pink puppet p...
