L.A. Councilmen motion to allow street vending on Hollywood Blvd

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:38:36 GMT

Los Angeles council members are taking action to create special street vending zones across Los Angeles. In 2018, the LA City Council established a set of no-vending zones, including the Hollywood Walk of Fame, that prohibited street vending in those areas. Today, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez and Council President Paul Krekorian introduced a motion at the City Council meeting to eliminate the no-vending zone on Hollywood Boulevard that has been in place for five years. A first of its kind pilot project, street vendors, advocacy organizations and community members will work with the city to create a "special vending zone" on Hollywood Blvd if the motion passes. The Hollywood-based project would then expand to a citywide initiative to help improve street vending policies across L.A.  “As the son of street vendors, I’ve seen firsthand how street vendors are the ultimate entrepreneurs, contributing so much cultural vibrancy to Los Angeles,” said Councilmember Hugo Soto-Mar...

Popular money transfer app ordered to pay hefty fine for deceiving consumers

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:38:36 GMT

People living in the United States often use mobile transfer apps to send money to family or loved ones living abroad. One of those apps, Chime Sendwave, has totaled more than $1 billion in money transfers each year. That was a red flag to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and it’s why they’re stepping in. They say the mobile app has deceived consumers about the cost and speed of international money transfers by requiring consumers to waive their rights and protections.“There’s a remittance rule in effect that provides consumers with protections in this very industry,” Michael Favretto, assistant deputy enforcement director at CFPB told WTOP.The CFPB said the Chime Sendwave app promised an instant delivery of funds, or at least within 30 seconds, when in many cases, the transfer took much longer. And in some cases, the app said there would be no fee to transfer money, then charged consumers nonetheless.“It’s ripe for abuse and it’s ripe for decep...

Dozens of small posters, each one picturing a missing Israeli, as another sign blares just one word, scribbled in bright red: “Pain.”The images tell a story of unspeakable tragedy and palpable fear, as the war between Israel and Hamas prepares to enter its third week. The deadliest of the five Gaza wars, it has left more than 1,400 people in Israel dead, as well as more than 4,100 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The destruction is clear throughout Gaza, as Palestinians desperately search for survivors and are forced to walk through rubble left behind after Israeli bombardments. And anguish continues to ripple throughout Israel, as mothers bury their children, flags and flowers line even more graves, and couples become separated as one partner heads into combat. How Fairfax Co. is redefining what school lunch looks like

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:38:36 GMT

On Friday afternoon in the Braddock Elementary School cafeteria, Reva Smith looked on as dozens of students swarmed toward the line to get a slice of pizza.Fridays are pizza days on the Annandale, Virginia, campus, but Smith, the cafeteria manager, made sure to motivate students to explore the salad bar, too. There, the options include tomatoes, cucumbers and apple slices.Every school in Virginia’s largest district now has a salad bar, a step Fairfax County tried to take before the pandemic but then paused as the coronavirus spread. And with the help of Shaun Sawko, the county’s new executive director of food and nutrition services who has also worked in D.C. and Montgomery County schools, the school system is redefining how school lunches look and taste.“We all had school lunch and sometimes it gets a little boring … corn dogs and pizza and chicken tenders,” said Smith, who’s been at Braddock for about a year. But three months into the job, Sawko has already moved away from the food...

Student loan payments restart this month after a three-year pandemic pause, and it’s impacting how some people travel.According to a recent survey by travel deal site Going.com, 63% percent of respondents that had student loans said the repayments influenced their holiday travel plans. That same survey found that 38% said they would be more budget conscious, 17% percent said they would take fewer trips and 7% said they would visit cheaper destinations. Only 1% said the payments would cause them to take a shorter trip.Katy Nastro, a travel expert with Going.com, said for those hoping to score a deal, one option is to search for two cheaper one-way tickets than a more expensive roundtrip ticket. Another way to save, she said, is by expanding airport searches when booking.“If there was a really fantastic deal out of Newark or Baltimore from the D.C. area, take advantage of that,” Nastro said.Nastro strongly suggested those who have still not booked Thanksgiving or Christmas travel to do...
