OAKLAND — A 19-year-old man who was arrested on gun charges during an ongoing police investigation into the killings of two Berkeley brothers at an Oakland house party has pleaded no contest in exchange for a probation term, court records show.Jesse Moreno, of Oakland, pleaded no contest to being a juvenile offender in possession of a firearm on May 9 at a hearing before Judge Elena Condes. He was formally sentenced to two years probation on June 7, records show.Moreno was named as a person of interest in the investigation into the Oct. 1, 2022 killings of Jazy Sotelo Garcia, 17, and Angel Sotelo Garcia, 15, but has not been charged. At the May 9 hearing, county prosecutors made it clear the plea deal contains no promises about the double homicide investigation, should evidence of his possible involvement surface. If Moreno violates his probation, he could be sentenced to up to three years in prison, according to the terms of the deal. The brothers were shot and killed around 10...Las Vegas native Bryce Harper says A’s shouldn’t abandon Oakland

Bryce Harper and the Phillies are coming to Oakland this weekend. By the time they visit the A’s next year, though, the games might be in Las Vegas, Harper’s hometown. That doesn’t mean Harper would be happy to be going home for that series.“It should have been an expansion franchise, not the A’s,’’ Harper told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale in a piece posted Thursday morning. He then contrasted the A’s with the NHL’s Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup on Tuesday night.“Look at the Knights, they won the Cup, but they were an expansion franchise. They were Vegas-born, as people would say. It’s the first team that came to Vegas. I don’t think you can really match that.”Harper and teammate Bryson Stott, also a Las Vegas-area native, said the Raiders have not captured the city’s support in the same way that the Golden Knights have. Stott said he has seen a lot of visiting fans at NFL games in Vegas and attributed that to the Raiders...Cinemark and Westfield abandoning downtown SF just the latest in string of bad news

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The troubles for San Francisco's beleaguered downtown continued this week with the news Monday that Westfield would be pulling out from operating SF's biggest mall and that one of the mall's tenants, the Cinemark Century SF Centre 9 theater will go dark this week. ISLAMABAD (AP) — The International Monetary Fund slammed Pakistan’s government on Thursday over its proposal for the new annual budget, saying it failed to implement a more fair tax system in the draft. The harsh criticism by Esther Perez Ruiz, IMF’s representative for Pakistan, raised new concerns about the success of monthslong talks between the cash-strapped Islamic nation and the lender over a stalled bailout tranche. However, Perez Ruiz also said the IMF was offering to “work with the government in refining its strategy” for the budget. The government in Islamabad last week presented the budget in the National Assembly, or lower house of the parliament, for the next fiscal year, starting July 1. The draft also introduced a new tax amnesty scheme and skipped some of the anticipated taxes.
